The use of disposable gloves makes awareness of thorough hand disinfection in healthcare facilities more challenging.
This can pose a risk especially to vulnerable people, e.g. immunocompromised patients. Every year, around 33,000 people across Europe (1) die from infection with multi-resistant pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Hence, correct hand disinfection is even more important.
MRSA plays the biggest role in nosocomial infections. Therefore, research is at full speed for the development of new antibiotics to combat this pathogen. Since transmission mostly occurs via the hands, conscientious hand hygiene is essential to protect against infection. It is crucial to note that wearing disposable gloves in practices, clinics and care facilities does not replace thorough hand disinfection. Wearing gloves only provides additional protection against the transmission of germs.
